Is it suitable for my class?

For teachers

Gravity Sketch is a professional 3D design tool. You stand inside your drawing: strokes, curves, and surfaces appear in space around you, at full size if you want, and finished models export as OBJ or USDZ files (standard 3D file formats that desktop software can open). Design studios in the car and footwear industries use it for real work, and design schools teach it.

The one thing to settle before planning a unit is the account model, and it is contractual rather than educational.

The developer’s terms, effective 2026-02-24, say people under 18 may not use any part of the service, and the privacy policy says the service is not intended for children. Read strictly that excludes school classes. But the terms are written around who registers and agrees, and there is a model that does not put a minor in that position: the school creates a Gravity Sketch account on a school email alias, that one account is used across the headsets, students never register anything, and a teacher supervises. The school is the contracting party and an adult accepts the terms.

That is documented practice, not a theory. Grade 9 and Grade 10 Design Technology classes ran Gravity Sketch this way across 2022 and 2023, teacher-led, as part of a DT integration. The deployment is recorded in the school deployment record: a multi-headset fleet, one school-owned account per headset rather than per student, and an installed-app audit dated 2023-11-23 that lists Gravity Sketch across the fleet. Student reflections from that DT cohort describe exactly the intended use, one of them writing that “it can be used in the early phases of the design cycle to really enhance the idea”. It is also the path the app is built for: one account links to a headset, and signing a second account into the same headset triggers a Linked Device error, so a single persistent school account is the smooth option rather than a workaround.

Two caveats worth holding. First, those sessions predate the current terms, which took effect in February 2026, so they are evidence that the model works operationally, not evidence that the current terms permit it. Second, a strict reading of “may not use any part of the service” still covers a supervised student on someone else’s account, and the developer has not addressed the school-account case in writing. A school running per-student registrations is plainly outside the terms; a school running a managed account is in an unresolved but defensible position.

So: middle school and high school are retained here on the strength of the managed-account model plus documented practice, with the written confirmation still worth getting before any department scales up or spends money. Post-secondary and adult use raise no question at all.

The strongest classroom case for this app is as one stage of a design cycle, not as the lesson. Documented practice: a teacher sets a brief (a chair, say), students sketch the form in VR at true scale where proportion is felt rather than guessed, export the model, open it in CAD, 3D print it, hold the result, evaluate it against the brief, and carry the revision into the real build. The headset stage lasts one lesson and feeds the next four.

This is what makes it worth headset time. Students can already draw a chair and can already CAD a chair. What they cannot easily do is stand inside a chair-sized form and judge its proportion with their body before committing to it. Export is the load-bearing feature here: an app that cannot get the model out is a demonstration, not a design tool.

One practical consequence of the shared account: all student work saves into a single LandingPad cloud space rather than per student. Attribution for assessment has to be handled outside the app, by export naming, screenshots, or a class register of who built what.

For adult learners it is excellent. One headset plus the free screen-collab app is a workable studio station: one person sketches in VR while others watch, comment, and navigate the same room from a laptop.

For leadership

The app download is free, and the free tier includes the whole core creation toolset with unlimited OBJ and USDZ export. Paid tiers (Plus subscription, Team, Enterprise) add storage, formats, and larger collaboration rooms; there is a higher-education programme with unlimited licences for students and educators, keyed to institutional email addresses. The named partner is ArtCenter College of Design; the programme is framed for higher education, not schools.

Three things to weigh before any institutional commitment. First, the age bar: the terms exclude under-18s, so this cannot serve mainstream secondary classes.

For students

This is the tool professional car, shoe, and product designers use to sketch ideas in 3D. You draw in the air with two controllers, pull surfaces around like fabric, walk around your model at real size, and export it to Blender or CAD software. The basics come quickly; controlled surfacing takes real practice, and the built-in onboarding rooms (five rooms, fourteen stages) are the right way in. Note the age rule: the developer requires users to be 18 or over, so this is for older students. If you are heading toward design school or a design career, fluency here is directly relevant.

Best for

Limitations and cautions check these before planning a lesson

Developer terms (effective 2026-02-24) bar under-18s from using the service. This is manageable with a school-managed account but unresolved in writing, and it rules out any model where students register themselves

The controlling constraint is the developer’s terms: under-18s may not use the service. This is stated in the free-user EULA and the Plus terms effective 2026-02-24, and it is why no school-age band is recommended despite the obvious curriculum fit. The store’s 3+ content rating does not override it: the store rates content, the developer decides who may hold an account.

Connectivity and accounts are load-bearing: since February 2026 the free tier has no offline working, so a firewalled school network can break the whole workflow. Rooms carry voice chat and can be made public or joined by link, so treat collab features like any other online social surface: private rooms, approval queue, microphone default-mute, supervision.

A strict reading of "may not use any part of the service" would still cover a supervised student, and the developer has not addressed the school-account case in writing. One headset first: this is one of the better single-headset apps in the catalogue, on logistics alone. The wearer sketches; everyone else joins the same room from a browser or the desktop app, moves their own camera, and comments. Exported OBJ files give non-wearers real follow-up work in Blender or a slicer. Casting also works as a fallback.

Beyond one headset, friction accumulates. Every user needs their own LandingPad account with an email address. A headset remembers its linked account, and signing in with a second account raises a Linked Device error, so rotating many users through few devices is slow. Free rooms cap at three simultaneous collaborators. For an adult cohort, a realistic shape is a small set of headsets with fixed user-device pairing, plus screen participants, in 45-60 minute studio blocks. Budget several hours of onboarding before expecting independent work, and front-load the developer’s onboarding rooms.
